The world of AR/VR and what it holds for us in the future

The first word that comes to my mind when I see augmented reality technology is “fascinating”!

The growth of augmented reality technology has been rapidly increasing and is expected to increase manifolds in the coming years. Today, AR is being implemented in almost every industry one can think of and this is just the beginning.

One common obscurity people have is the difference between augmented reality and virtual reality. Augmented reality is exactly what the word says, it augments ones’ reality i.e a digital object or a different reality is overlaid onto your existing reality (the real world) with the help of devices like smart-phones or smart glasses. Snapchat filters are an example of augmented reality.

Virtual reality is the computer technology which replaces the real world environment with a digitally simulated world,  where the user is submerged into a completely new reality. Imagine you’re sitting on your couch, you wear a headset, and the next thing you know, you are in the middle of the Louvre museum in Paris! That’s what an VR experience offers.

While AR allows you to alter your reality in a headset free mode, VR requires a whole new setting that can be viewed through a head mounted device. VR is primarily used in simulation training, experiencing events and ofcourse gaming, whereas AR is the technology that is present literally everywhere around us.

From assisting doctors in complex procedures, to shopping for the perfect rug, AR is being used in every possible field, promising a future packed with innovation. AR has also assisted in education during the harsh reality of Covid-19 pandemic where teachers in Kerala have been seen to introduce AR into online classes for a better education and a more practical environment” helping students to learn and understand things in a better way. So don’t be surprised to find an elephant or a dinosaur in your living room!

Although AR has been around for almost 30 years now, the development in this field in the last decade has been phenomenal and is only expected to grow. With tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Facebook heavily investing in this technology, augmented reality is definitely going to shape our futures in ways unimaginable.
